AI Trading Journal Template: Record Decisions Before Reviewing Results
Use a practical trading journal template for entry evidence, initial risk, execution, and weekly AI review. Separate rule adherence from profitable outcomes.
By TickerAI
An AI trading journal is useful when it preserves the decision made before the outcome was known. A polished explanation written after the trade can hide the difference between a planned setup, an execution mistake, and a lucky result.
Use AI to organize and question the record, while keeping original observations and broker data identifiable. The goal is a review another person could reproduce, not a persuasive story about why every result made sense.
Save the decision before entry
Write the instrument, exact source, timeframe, observation timestamp, setup condition, and invalidation. Include the entry zone, protective stop, target, volume, and initial cash risk, with the assumptions behind the calculation.
Record a no-trade condition too. If an economic release or missing data makes the setup unacceptable, that decision belongs in the journal even though it produces no broker ticket.
Avoid recording only trades that were executed. The decisions to wait, cancel, or reject an AI proposal can reveal whether the workflow follows its own rules.

| Section | Fields to preserve |
|---|---|
| Identity | Account alias, exact symbol, strategy version, date |
| Evidence | Data source, completed candle, relevant levels, uncertainties |
| Plan | Entry, invalidation, stop, target, allowed management actions |
| Risk | Initial cash budget, contract inputs, rounded volume, exposure |
| Execution | Order and position identifiers, actual fills, charges, refusals |
| Outcome | Net result, realized R if supported, rule deviations |
| Review | Observation, hypothesis, proposed test, unresolved questions |
Use an account alias in working notes and keep unnecessary personal identifiers out of material shared for review. Never include a broker password in the journal.
This is a proposed template, not a claim that TickerAI currently has a dedicated journal form with these fields.
Separate process quality from P/L
Consider two hypothetical trades with the same +$80 net result. Trade A followed a saved plan with $40 initial risk, giving +2R. Trade B increased size after an adverse move and never recorded its changed exposure.
Their dollar outcomes match, but their evidence does not support the same conclusion. Trade A has a reproducible initial-risk denominator. Trade B needs investigation before it can be presented as a comparable +2R strategy outcome.
Likewise, a losing trade can follow a tested rule correctly. Evaluate rule adherence and financial outcome separately before deciding which aspect of the process needs changing.
Reconcile against the broker record
Keep the broker statement as the source for actual execution and account charges. MetaTrader's historical report guide describes order and deal information available in account reports.
A journal row and a deal row need not have a one-to-one relationship. Partial closes, additions, and reversals can create several records for one trading idea. Preserve the mapping rather than counting every cash-positive exit as an independent successful setup.
If the initial risk was never recorded, leave realized R unknown or label a separately justified reconstruction clearly. A later stop level is not automatically the original denominator.
Run a focused weekly AI review
Choose a closed period and ask for coverage first: number of ideas logged, executed positions, omitted records, and unresolved mappings. Then ask for repeated process issues with actual references to journal entries.
A useful prompt is: “Review the saved plans and broker results for this week. Separate facts, rule violations, and hypotheses. Do not infer a setup label, emotion, or original risk that was not recorded. Propose one measurable change to test on later data.”
For a sample of 12 journaled decisions, suppose three violated a written entry rule. The observed adherence rate is nine divided by twelve, or 75%. That is a process statistic for those records, not a prediction of the strategy's win rate.
Use TickerAI within its current capabilities
TickerAI can discuss saved chat context and retrieve supported account performance, deals, positions, and broker charts. It does not automatically provide a dedicated structured journal, strategy-tagging database, or complete weekly audit merely because the account is connected.
Keep the journal in a format you can preserve, provide the relevant context deliberately, and verify tool coverage. Closed-deal requests can be limited, so ask whether all required records were returned.
Continue with MT5 trade-history analysis and expectancy review. Use partial-close accounting when grouping exits. An honest journal makes mistakes and uncertainty visible; it cannot guarantee improved returns.
