ATR Stop Loss Explained: Volatility, Stop Distance, and Position Size

Use average true range to compare a stop with recent volatility. Follow an ATR calculation and see how wider stops change lot size at a fixed cash budget.

By TickerAI

Average true range, or ATR, summarizes recent price ranges. Comparing a proposed stop distance with ATR can help describe how tight that stop is relative to recent movement. ATR does not tell you whether the trade direction is correct or guarantee that price stays within a particular distance.

An ATR-based stop is a rule to evaluate, not a universal setting. The period, timeframe, data source, and entry logic all change what the number means.

Calculate true range before averaging it

True range is the largest of the current high-to-low range, the absolute distance from current high to previous close, and the absolute distance from current low to previous close. ATR averages those true ranges under a specified smoothing method.

Suppose the previous close is 100, the next high is 103, and the low is 101. The three distances are two, three, and one. True range is therefore three, including the gap from the previous close.

MetaTrader documents the definition in its ATR reference. TickerAI's scanner computes a Wilder-style ATR from its candle data; a platform using different smoothing or history can produce a different value.

Express the stop in ATR units

If a hypothetical hourly EURUSD ATR is 0.0010, that equals 10 pips under the usual EURUSD convention. A stop 0.0005 away is 0.5 ATR; a stop 0.0020 away is 2 ATR.

Those labels compare distance with recent movement. They do not say how often the stop will be reached. A 2-ATR stop is not a 95% confidence interval or a promise that two periods of movement will fit inside it.

Keep units consistent. An hourly ATR and a daily ATR summarize different bars. Do not compare the raw values as though both described the same holding period.

Worked example: a wider stop needs a smaller position

Assume a hypothetical USD account, a $40 cash budget before costs, and a EURUSD specification with $10 pip value per standard lot. These are example inputs rather than recommended risk settings.

Stop distanceLoss on 1 lotRaw size for $40Volume rounded down to 0.01
10 pips$1000.40 lots0.40 lots
15 pips$1500.2667 lots0.26 lots
20 pips$2000.20 lots0.20 lots

At 0.26 lots, a 15-pip loss is approximately $39 before costs. Keeping 0.40 lots while widening the stop from 10 to 20 pips would double planned price risk to $80.

Use your broker's actual contract settings rather than carrying this EURUSD pip value across instruments. The gold sizing guide explains why the contract matters for XAUUSD.

Structure and volatility can disagree

Suppose the price level that invalidates a long is 18 pips below entry, while a selected ATR multiple implies 10 pips. Moving the stop to 10 pips changes what event exits the trade. It does not preserve the original structural invalidation.

Record the proposed rule explicitly: a structural stop, a volatility stop, or a defined combination. If the required distance makes the trade too large for the account's minimum volume or leaves an unattractive target, skipping is an available outcome.

Do not widen an existing stop reactively while keeping the original volume and describing the risk budget as unchanged. That changes the money exposed and should be recorded as a separate decision.

What TickerAI currently supports

TickerAI's scanner calculates ATR-based volatility information, including ATR as a percentage of price. Its chart tool currently exposes SMA, EMA, RSI, MACD, and Bollinger indicators, rather than a selectable ATR chart pane. Do not assume a prompt requesting an ATR overlay can render one through the existing chart controls.

Ask the assistant to identify whether an ATR figure came from scanner output, a reproducible candle calculation, or an external source. If it cannot verify the number, keep it out of the order decision rather than treating an estimate as measured data.

Compare planned and realized results using strategy testing, and calculate final lots with the position sizing guide. ATR can organize volatility analysis; it does not cap the loss from a gap or adverse fill.
