Forex Session Times and Daylight Saving: Avoid a One-Hour Calendar Error
Convert London, New York, UTC, and Pakistan time correctly around clock changes. Check broker server timestamps and use a dated trading-session review process.
By TickerAI
A forex session label is not a permanent UTC offset. London and New York change clocks on different dates, while your broker server, computer, and economic calendar may use still other timezone settings.
Before filtering trades by session or scheduling an event review, record the date and the named timezone. A fixed offset that worked last month can move a rule by an hour around a seasonal transition.
The 2026 autumn transition has a mismatch window
The UK government's clock-change calendar lists 25 October 2026 for the return to Greenwich Mean Time. NIST's U.S. daylight-saving guidance lists 1 November 2026 as the end of that year's U.S. daylight-saving period.
For London and New York, this creates a period when London has changed clocks but New York has not. Do not extrapolate these dates to every year or every location within a country.
The table below compares the same absolute instant, 13:00 UTC, on three example dates. It is a timezone conversion exercise, not a claim about an exchange's opening bell or your broker's trading hours.
| Date in 2026 | UTC | London | New York | Karachi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 October | 13:00 | 14:00 | 09:00 | 18:00 |
| 27 October | 13:00 | 13:00 | 09:00 | 18:00 |
| 3 November | 13:00 | 13:00 | 08:00 | 18:00 |
A strategy defined at 09:00 New York local time is therefore not equivalent to one defined at 13:00 UTC throughout those dates. Choose the intended reference and convert it for each date.
Separate market hours from your review schedule
A trader might define a personal London review at 09:00 local time or analyze a chosen New York morning interval. Those are workflow definitions. They do not establish that every forex or gold contract is executable during the entire interval.
Check the broker's actual symbol sessions, holidays, and maintenance breaks separately. An economic release occurring during a named session does not guarantee normal spreads or uninterrupted execution.
For crypto, continuous market availability also does not mean a particular broker CFD or data endpoint is always available. Verify the execution venue rather than relying on a generic crypto-open label.
Preserve original timestamps in trade analysis
Store the broker timestamp as returned, its documented timezone, and a normalized instant when you can establish the conversion. Add a session label as a separate derived field.
Do not overwrite the original time with an inferred label. If the server timezone is unknown, explain that uncertainty rather than presenting a precise London-session win rate. Historical offsets can require date-specific conversion rather than the server's current offset.
An error near midnight can change the assigned weekday or daily-loss bucket as well as the session. That can make a performance breakdown appear meaningful when the grouping itself is wrong.
What TickerAI's current session display tells you
TickerAI's desk includes a session clock. Its current implementation approximates London and New York daylight-saving shifts by month rather than calculating exact transition dates for each location. Treat it as an orientation aid, especially around transition weeks, rather than an authoritative event scheduler.
The economic calendar is a separate source of event timestamps. Confirm the calendar's displayed timezone and the official publisher's schedule before acting on a release. A session label cannot verify that conversion for you.
Ask: “State the original timestamp and source timezone, then convert this event into Asia/Karachi for this date. If the timezone is unknown, say so instead of assuming a fixed offset.”
Build a dated session rule
Write the rule with a named timezone, start and end conditions, and treatment of holidays. Save the converted UTC boundaries for each evaluation date. Use a maintained timezone database rather than hand-editing an offset twice a year.
When reviewing results, check several records around clock changes against the broker statement. Use MT5 trade-history analysis and the economic calendar guide together. Correct timing makes analysis reproducible; it does not imply that any particular session is profitable.
