MT5 Order Types Explained: Market, Limit, and Stop Orders
Compare MT5 market, buy limit, sell limit, buy stop, and sell stop orders using worked price examples, then check how TickerAI selects an order type.
By TickerAI
An MT5 market order requests execution at available prices now. A limit order waits for a specified price or better, while a stop entry becomes actionable after price reaches a trigger. Choosing between them expresses how you want to enter, not how confident you are about direction.
The examples below use hypothetical EURUSD quotes. They explain mechanics rather than recommend a trade. Your broker determines which order types, distances, and fill policies are available.
Start with the bid and ask
For a typical forex quote, a buy enters on the ask and a sell enters on the bid. The spread separates those prices. A chart displaying only one side can therefore appear not to have touched a pending entry even when the relevant executable side did.
Check the order ticket rather than relying on the candle alone. MetaTrader's trading principles guide describes these order categories and the relevant quote sides.
Compare the five common entry instructions
Suppose the hypothetical bid is 1.1000 and ask is 1.1002:
| Instruction | Example | Intended behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Market buy | Buy at currently available prices | Enter without waiting for a lower quote |
| Buy limit | 1.0980, below current ask | Wait for a lower buy price |
| Sell limit | 1.1020, above current bid | Wait for a higher sell price |
| Buy stop | 1.1020, above current ask | Wait for an upward trigger |
| Sell stop | 1.0980, below current bid | Wait for a downward trigger |
These are entry instructions. A protective stop loss attached to an existing position serves a different purpose from a buy stop or sell stop intended to open exposure.
A limit entry can remain unfilled
Imagine an analysis identifies a possible pullback entry at 1.0980 while the ask is 1.1002. A buy limit expresses willingness to buy lower, but price may rise without revisiting that level. Missing the move is a possible outcome of the instruction.
Do not convert the order into a market buy automatically because waiting feels uncomfortable. That creates a new entry price, stop distance, and reward-to-risk calculation. Record whether the original setup is still valid before making that decision.
A stop entry has a different trade-off. It can request participation after an upward or downward trigger, but the trigger price is not a promise of the final fill. Inspect the broker's execution policy and actual trade confirmation.
How TickerAI selects an executable order
TickerAI's current execution path compares the live ask for a long, or bid for a short, with the proposed entry zone. A quote inside the zone leads to a market request. A quote beyond the zone in the trade direction leads to a limit request at the nearer zone edge. A quote that has not yet reached the zone leads to a stop request.
For a hypothetical long entry zone of 1.1000–1.1010:
- Ask 1.1005 is inside the zone: market request.
- Ask 1.1020 is above it: buy limit at 1.1010.
- Ask 1.0990 is below it: buy stop at 1.1000.
These describe the implemented routing rule, not a claim that every request will be accepted. Account permissions, risk checks, symbol availability, and broker constraints still apply.
Recheck risk at the actual entry
An entry zone is not one price. If a long has a stop at 1.0970, an entry at 1.1000 has a 30-pip distance, while 1.1010 has 40 pips under the usual convention. The same volume risks different amounts at those entries.
TickerAI's sizing and displayed reward-to-risk use the zone midpoint in the current implementation. Treat those figures as estimates and compare them with the selected order price and eventual fill. See forex position sizing.
Define when a pending order becomes stale
Write a cancellation condition before submitting: a time boundary, a changed market structure, or an upcoming release. Do not assume every pending order expires automatically. TickerAI's ordinary idea execution currently sends no explicit expiration, so check the broker order and manage it deliberately.
Use the pre-trade checklist before submitting and the trading costs guide when comparing planned prices with fills. Order selection organizes execution; it cannot remove market risk.
