Trading Drawdown vs Daily Loss Limit: What Each Measures

Learn the difference between balance drawdown, equity drawdown, and a daily loss limit, with recovery calculations and examples for MT5 account reviews.

By TickerAI

Drawdown measures a decline from a reference value. A daily loss limit measures losses over a defined day using a specified calculation. They can trigger at different times because the reference value, reset time, and treatment of open positions may differ.

Before relying on either control, write down exactly what it measures. “Stop at 3%” is incomplete without saying 3% of what, which losses count, and when the calculation resets.

Balance and equity tell different stories

Balance generally reflects closed transactions, while equity incorporates floating profit and loss. Suppose a hypothetical account begins at $10,000, closes trades for a net $100 gain, and then has an open position showing a $600 loss. Ignoring other adjustments, balance is $10,100 and equity is $9,500.

A check based only on today's closed results can show a profitable day while the account is below its starting value. Reviewing open risk alongside realized results prevents those two views from being confused.

Peak-to-trough drawdown formula

Drawdown percentage = (reference peak − current value) ÷ reference peak × 100

If equity reaches $12,000 and later falls to $10,800, the decline from that peak is 10%. The account can still be above its original deposit while experiencing a meaningful drawdown.

Maximum drawdown is the largest peak-to-later-trough decline within the measured series. Sampling matters: an end-of-day series can miss an intraday equity dip. State whether a report uses balance or equity, its sampling interval, and its date range.

Deposits and withdrawals can also distort a raw account-value curve. Separate cash flows from trading performance before interpreting a historical drawdown percentage.

Starting-equity stops are a different calculation

A session that stops after a decline from starting equity is not necessarily using a trailing high-water mark. If a session starts at $10,000, rises to $10,500, then falls to $9,800, it is down 2% from its start but about 6.67% from its peak.

Neither label should be substituted for the other. TickerAI Auto Trading monitors a configured decline from session starting equity; do not assume that setting implements a broker or prop firm's trailing drawdown rule.

Why recovering a loss takes a larger percentage

After a 10% loss, $10,000 becomes $9,000. Recovering the $1,000 requires an 11.11% gain on the smaller balance.

Account declineGain needed to return to the original value
5%5.26%
10%11.11%
20%25%
30%42.86%
50%100%

These are arithmetic relationships, not expected recovery paths. Increasing trade size to reach the original balance sooner creates additional risk rather than changing the equation.

Define a daily loss limit explicitly

For a daily rule, record the reset timezone, reference balance or equity, treatment of commissions and swaps, and whether open losses count. If you trade under an external account agreement, use that provider's current definition rather than assuming a software setting matches it.

TickerAI's ordinary trade-idea risk check compares negative daily net realized P/L with the current account balance. This is distinct from the Auto Trading session's equity guard. Read the risk model and verify the current settings before relying on either workflow.

Review triggers as well as outcomes

A monitor checks at intervals and any cancellation or closing action still needs execution. Prices can move between a threshold breach, detection, and a fill. A configured limit therefore does not guarantee the final account value.

Use trade-history analysis to inspect when losses accumulated, and the pre-trade checklist to review exposure before adding another position. These definitions help evaluate risk controls; they do not prescribe an appropriate loss limit for a particular trader.
