FOMC Statement, Press Conference, and Minutes: A Trader’s Event Checklist
Separate an FOMC rate decision from its statement, press conference, projections, and later minutes. Build a timestamped event plan for forex and gold exposure.

An FOMC meeting can generate several distinct information events. A rate decision, policy statement, press conference, economic projections when published, and later meeting minutes are not interchangeable calendar entries.
For a forex or gold review, identify which document or event you are discussing and when it became available. A summary assembled afterward can accidentally combine information that was not known at the first price move.
Use the official meeting record
The Federal Reserve's meeting calendar and information page links the materials associated with particular meetings. Check the relevant meeting rather than assuming every date includes an identical set of publications.
A statement communicates the policy decision and accompanying assessment. A press conference can provide additional explanation and answers. Minutes are a later record of a meeting, not a second announcement of the same live decision.
If projections are included, read their labels and dates. Do not describe a participant projection as a binding promise about future policy.
Keep each stage on its own timeline
| Stage | What to save | Common review error |
|---|---|---|
| Before publication | Existing expectations and open exposure | Reconstructing expectations after the result |
| Statement or decision | Original document and timestamp | Using later commentary as if already known |
| Press conference | Time of the specific statement or answer | Treating the whole conference as one instant |
| Later minutes | Meeting covered and publication date | Confusing meeting date with release date |
The table is a recordkeeping method. It does not imply that every stage produces a large move or that an early reaction must reverse.
Express rate changes in the right units
Suppose a hypothetical target range changes from 3.75%–4.00% to 3.50%–3.75%. Both boundaries fall by 0.25 percentage point, or 25 basis points. These are invented example rates, not a current policy statement.
That is not a 25% relative reduction in the rate. A basis point is 0.01 percentage point. Confusing a rate level, a percentage-point change, and a relative percentage change can make an AI explanation numerically wrong while sounding confident.
Whether a change surprised participants requires an expectations measure captured beforehand. The direction of the announced change alone does not establish that the outcome was unexpected.
Avoid a one-label macro conclusion
Terms such as hawkish and dovish summarize an interpretation. Ask which exact passages, comparisons, or answers support that label. Distinguish an observed change in wording from a prediction about future rates or prices.
A model can produce a coherent story after seeing the outcome without demonstrating predictive skill. Preserve the original document and the analysis timestamp so a later review can separate evidence from hindsight.
If statement wording and later answers appear to conflict, record the conflict rather than forcing every item into one trade direction. Waiting for a clearer setup is a decision that can also be logged.
Review exposure across the whole event window
List open positions and pending orders before the first scheduled item. Several USD pairs and gold can expose the account to a shared scenario even when their symbols differ. Do not infer independence from the number of tickets.
Specify how your plan treats pending entries, wider spreads, unavailable quotes, and a conference lasting longer than a single calendar slot. An event policy needs explicit conditions rather than an instruction to be careful.
Use correlated exposure analysis and trading costs to make those assumptions visible. A stop remains subject to execution conditions.
Review the event with TickerAI
TickerAI can retrieve calendar events and explain available information, but its event feeds do not guarantee complete live transcripts or every official document. Ask it to state which materials it actually accessed and which facts remain unverified.
Verify the official schedule and documents directly, then use calendar review and the trading journal to preserve the plan. This workflow improves the clarity of an event review; it does not promise that interpreting the Fed produces profitable trades.
