Tick Volume vs Real Volume: Read Forex and Crypto Charts Correctly
Distinguish MT5 tick counts from traded volume and Binance candle volume. Check units, unfinished bars, and how TickerAI uses a volume spike in its scanner.
By TickerAI
A volume bar is meaningful only after you identify what it counts. In a broker forex feed, the available series may count ticks or quote updates. In an exchange feed, a candle can report traded quantity in an asset or quote currency.
Neither number automatically represents activity across the entire global market. Before calling a move volume-confirmed, identify the source, unit, interval, and completeness of the observation.
Read the field definition first
MetaQuotes' candle data structure separates tick volume from real trade volume. A tick count does not tell you how many dollars or lots changed hands, and a zero or unavailable real-volume field should not be interpreted as proof that nothing traded.
Binance's spot market-data documentation distinguishes candle volume and quote-asset volume. For a pair such as BTCUSDT, those quantities have different units.
Do not compare 400 BTC directly with 24 million USDT and describe the larger number as more activity. The units must be identified before a calculation or cross-market comparison makes sense.
A hypothetical exchange-volume example
Suppose a candle reports 400 BTC of base-asset volume and 24 million USDT of quote-asset volume. Dividing quote volume by base volume gives 60,000 USDT per BTC as an implied volume-weighted average under those definitions.
That ratio is not necessarily the candle close, a currently executable quote, or a forecast. If the next candle reports 500 BTC at a different price level, its quote volume can change because both quantity and price changed.
| Field | Hypothetical amount | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Base-asset volume | 400 | BTC |
| Quote-asset volume | 24,000,000 | USDT |
| Quote divided by base | 60,000 | USDT per BTC |
For a CFD representing Bitcoin, contract volume or tick count can describe a different venue and product. A familiar BTC label does not establish equivalent volume data.
Compare activity within a consistent series
Suppose the preceding 20 completed candles average 1,000 ticks and the next completed candle has 1,900. Its activity ratio is 1.9 times that reference average.
This comparison can highlight an unusual observation within that broker feed. It does not prove that executed trade quantity increased by 90%, or that another broker would report the same ratio.
Keep the reference window separate from the candle being evaluated. Including the current spike in its own average changes the ratio and can create a different rule from the one described.
Do not compare a forming bar with a completed bar casually
A five-minute candle observed after one minute has had less time to accumulate activity. Its volume is incomplete. A bar that currently looks quiet can finish active, and a fast initial burst may fade.
State whether the comparison uses completed bars or an explicit elapsed-time adjustment. Such an adjustment is a separate modeling choice, not a reason to assume activity arrives evenly throughout the interval.
How TickerAI handles volume
For broker candles, TickerAI currently prefers a nonzero real-volume value and otherwise falls back to tick volume or zero. Its Binance candle adapter uses the base-volume field. Ask the assistant to identify which interpretation applies to the selected source.
The scanner compares the latest bar with an average of the preceding 20 bars. A ratio above 1.8 adds a directional score contribution, with direction based on the latest close relative to the previous close. That rule is not an estimate of winning probability or order-flow imbalance.
A scanner label should be interpreted alongside the bar's completion status. TickerAI does not turn the volume column into a consolidated global forex-volume feed.
Use volume as a question to investigate
Ask: “State the venue, volume unit, timeframe, last completed bar, and reference window. Explain whether this is tick activity or traded quantity before calling the move confirmed.” If a required field is unavailable, preserve that limitation.
Continue with crypto watchlist scanning, broker chart differences, and strategy testing. A well-defined volume comparison organizes evidence; it does not prove that an entry has an edge.
