MAE and MFE Explained: Review What Happened Before a Trade Closed
Calculate maximum adverse and favorable excursion with a worked example. Check data resolution, position size, and why chart extremes are not executable exit promises.
By TickerAI
Maximum adverse excursion describes the worst movement against a position during its lifetime. Maximum favorable excursion describes the best movement in its favor. MAE and MFE add path information to a closed result, but they do not tell you that an exit at the best observed price was achievable.
Define the units and sign convention first. This guide reports adverse and favorable magnitudes as nonnegative distances or money amounts, with separate signed realized P/L.
Start with one constant-size position
Assume a hypothetical long enters at 100, trades as low as 98.5 and as high as 106 while open, then exits at 104. Its initial stop distance was two price units. Assume size is unchanged and each one-unit move is worth $10.
| Measure | Price distance | Money equivalent before costs | Initial-risk units |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAE magnitude | 100 − 98.5 = 1.5 | $15 | 0.75R |
| MFE magnitude | 106 − 100 = 6 | $60 | 3R |
| Realized price gain | 104 − 100 = 4 | $40 | 2R |
If total closing and holding costs under the chosen accounting convention are $2, realized net profit is $38, or 1.9R against the original $20 risk. Do not silently subtract the same costs from an already net result.
MetaTrader's trading report documentation describes its MFE and MAE measures and graphs. Verify that report's specific currency and aggregation convention before comparing it with your own calculation.
Limit the observation window to the actual trade
Only observations between entry and the relevant final exit belong to the position lifetime. A candle overlapping the entry can include a low that occurred before the trade opened. A candle overlapping the exit can include a high reached after it closed.
Using those whole-bar extremes can overstate an excursion. Finer data may help, but missing timestamps should be recorded as a limitation rather than filled by an imagined sequence.
For short positions, favorable movement is downward and adverse movement upward. Write that geometry explicitly instead of reusing the long formula without changing its signs.
Check price side and data resolution
A chart based on one quote side may not represent the prices at which the position could have closed. Broker quotes, exchange trades, and a public chart can provide different evidence.
A one-minute series also cannot establish every intraminute movement or order fill. Label a bar-based reconstruction as an estimate. An account-level equity sample is not automatically a complete path record for each individual trade.
Read the OHLC ambiguity guide before interpreting candle extremes as a precise execution history.
Handle additions and partial exits deliberately
The simple table assumes constant volume. After a partial exit, the remaining exposure is smaller; after an addition, it is larger. Multiplying the entire lifetime's maximum price distance by the original volume can therefore misstate the money path.
Choose whether the review analyzes a price-only setup, each constituent position, or the evolving combined exposure. Preserve the deal mapping and initial-risk record needed for that choice.
If those records are unavailable, report distance-based observations separately from money estimates. Use partial-close accounting to avoid changing the original trade denominator afterward.
Turn excursion observations into a testable question
A large MFE followed by a smaller gain can suggest an exit question worth studying. It does not prove that a tighter trailing stop would have improved the entire strategy. Other trades might be stopped out earlier under that same rule.
Likewise, a winner with substantial MAE does not automatically justify widening every stop. Test the proposed management change on all qualifying trades and later data, including the losses it creates.
What TickerAI can help review
TickerAI can retrieve supported closed-deal records and candles, but its current tools do not guarantee a complete per-position tick archive or a dedicated MAE/MFE report. A limited history response may also omit part of the required sample.
Ask the assistant to state coverage, price source, interval, trade boundaries, and volume assumptions before reconstructing excursions. Keep unavailable quantities unavailable. Use the journal template to preserve the evidence and strategy testing for a proposed change. Excursions describe the observed path; they do not reveal a hindsight-free perfect exit.
