MT5 Netting vs Hedging Accounts: What Happens to Your Positions?
Compare MT5 netting and hedging with same-direction and opposite-order examples. Check position counts, stop settings, and automation assumptions on demo.
By TickerAI
An MT5 account's position accounting mode determines how deals appear as positions. In netting mode, activity for one symbol combines into a single net position. In hedging mode, separate positions can coexist, including opposite directions.
The broker sets the account mode. Do not infer it from the broker name, a familiar symbol, or whether the platform allows you to click both Buy and Sell. Confirm it before evaluating an automated strategy's position-management behavior.
Follow the position, not just the order count
MetaTrader's position accounting guide explains the two systems. An order is an instruction and a deal is an execution; the resulting position depends on the account mode.
Assume a hypothetical EURUSD account starts flat and executes a 0.30-lot buy, followed by another 0.20-lot buy. Under netting, the account holds one 0.50-lot long position. Under hedging, it can hold separate long positions of 0.30 and 0.20 lots.
The combined directional volume is similar in that simplified example, but the number of position tickets differs. A limit on position count therefore does not necessarily limit the number of entries or total lots.
An opposite order can mean something different
Now suppose the account with the 0.50-lot long receives a new 0.20-lot sell execution:
| Account mode | Simplified resulting state |
|---|---|
| Netting | One remaining 0.30-lot long |
| Hedging | Existing longs remain; a separate 0.20-lot short can open |
An explicit close operation and a new opposite entry are not interchangeable on every account. Review the actual command and resulting broker position state before assuming the intended exposure was removed.
If an opposite netting execution exceeds the existing volume, the net position can reverse direction. That makes a volume error more consequential than simply leaving a smaller position open.
Check costs and margin independently
Opposite positions do not automatically cancel all economic costs. They can retain gross exposure, financing effects, spreads, and broker-specific margin treatment even when the net directional amount looks small.
For example, a hypothetical 0.50-lot long and 0.20-lot short have net long volume of 0.30 lots but gross open volume of 0.70. Those figures answer different questions. Do not assume the collateral requirement or close-out cost equals that of one 0.30-lot position.
Verify the current broker specification and account terms. The leverage and margin guide explains why margin is a separate calculation from planned price risk.
Stop settings need a fresh check after changes
Adding, reducing, or reversing exposure can affect the relevant position's entry basis and protective settings. Inspect the actual remaining stop and target rather than relying on the values from the first ticket.
On a netted symbol, multiple strategy entries share a position. If one process updates a protective level, another process may be relying on that same position. Separate strategy labels do not automatically create separate broker-level positions.
A useful test record includes the before state, requested operation, executed volume, after state, and resulting stop and target. Save the exact timestamps so an unexpected state can be reconstructed.
What this means for TickerAI testing
TickerAI reads broker positions and orders, checks position-related limits, and manages eligible Auto Trading session positions through its broker connection. The current user-facing setup does not establish a blanket guarantee that every netting and hedging scenario behaves identically.
Use a supported demo account to test the actual accounting mode. In particular, do not mix manual trades, unrelated agents, and an automated session on the same netted symbol without first establishing how position ownership and management behave.
Ask the assistant to report observed tickets and volumes rather than assume that each proposed idea maps permanently to a separate position. If account mode cannot be verified from available data, resolve it with the broker before enabling execution.
A bounded demo sequence
Start flat, make one small permitted entry, add a same-direction entry, then inspect the resulting positions. Test reduction with the intended close control and verify remaining volume and protective settings. Record broker refusals as part of the test rather than retrying with an unrelated operation.
Use the MT5 demo workflow and partial-exit accounting for the next checks. This guide describes account mechanics and testing questions, not a recommendation to hedge or increase leverage.
