MT5 Swap and Rollover: Calculate an Overnight Holding Cost
Check swap units, long and short rates, rollover multipliers, and account-currency conversion. Follow a hypothetical points-based financing calculation.
By TickerAI
An overnight financing adjustment can change a trade's net outcome even when entry and exit prices look favorable. In MT5, the swap calculation depends on the symbol's settings and the broker's rules, not a universal daily fee.
Before holding a position across a financing boundary, identify the calculation mode, the relevant long or short rate, its units, and the applicable rollover schedule. A number labeled swap is incomplete without that context.
Read the rate and calculation mode together
MetaTrader's symbol specification guide describes the swap fields available for an instrument. A rate expressed in points is not interpreted the same way as an amount expressed directly in money or a rate under another calculation mode.
Long and short settings can differ. A positive rate can represent a credit under the applicable convention, while a negative adjustment can reduce the account result. Verify the posted record rather than assuming all directions always pay the same charge.
Do not use a familiar symbol suffix or a screenshot from another account as evidence of your own current rate.
A hypothetical points-based calculation
Assume a simplified EURUSD contract of 100,000 units per lot, a USD account, point size 0.00001, and a long swap rate of −12 points for one ordinary charge period. Assume the broker's documented points-based method applies directly as follows.
At 0.10 lots, the position contains 10,000 EUR. One quoted point has a value of $0.10 under these inputs. The ordinary adjustment is therefore:
−12 points × $0.10 per point = −$1.20
This is an illustrative contract and rate, not an actual current broker quote. Other calculation modes require their own formula and may need currency conversion.
Apply the actual schedule
Suppose the position crosses three hypothetical charging events with multipliers one, one, and three, and the rate remains unchanged. The total weighted charge count is five, giving −$6.00 in this simplified example.
| Charge event | Assumed multiplier | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| First | 1 | −$1.20 |
| Second | 1 | −$1.20 |
| Third | 3 | −$3.60 |
| Total | 5 | −$6.00 |
The table deliberately does not name a weekday. Do not assume every instrument uses the same triple-charge day, rollover boundary, or holiday treatment. Inspect the actual schedule for the relevant holding dates.
If rates change during the hold, calculate each event using its applicable inputs rather than multiplying today's rate by every past day.
Reconcile charges without double-counting
Suppose a hypothetical price result is +$20, commission totals −$1, and financing totals −$6. The net under those assumptions is +$13. If the statement's displayed net already includes those adjustments, subtracting them again would be wrong.
Keep signed cash entries and explain whether a total is gross or net. A credit of $2 should increase the result under a signed-entry convention; subtracting the word swap mechanically can reverse its meaning.
For a partial close, verify which records contain accrued charges and how they are allocated. Do not assume every deal row carries the complete position's financing cost.
Separate financing from price risk and margin
A favorable financing rate does not eliminate adverse price movement, margin requirements, or liquidation risk. A strategy that earns a small credit can still lose much more through the instrument's price.
Also distinguish broker overnight financing from perpetual-futures funding. They belong to different contracts and mechanisms. Compare crypto spot and perpetuals before transferring a carry assumption between them.
Review holding costs with TickerAI
TickerAI can retrieve supported account deals and performance information. Ask the assistant to identify the actual financing fields, their signs, and the period covered before estimating net results. Missing fields should remain missing rather than being filled from a typical market rate.
Executable sizing uses broker specifications, but a trade idea's stop-based risk is not a guarantee that all future holding charges fit the displayed number. Review trading costs, partial-close accounting, and the intended holding policy. Correct financing arithmetic makes the plan clearer; it does not establish that carrying the position is profitable.
