Crypto Spot vs Perpetual Futures: Funding, Basis, and Chart Differences
Distinguish a spot crypto pair from a perpetual contract before using an AI chart. Calculate hypothetical funding and basis, and check TickerAI’s actual data source.
By TickerAI
A crypto spot pair and a perpetual futures contract can reference the same underlying asset while exposing the trader to different prices, costs, and account mechanics. A BTCUSDT label alone does not establish which product a chart or order represents.
Before carrying analysis from one venue to another, identify the contract, price source, margin rules, and funding mechanism. A useful comparison starts with those facts rather than assuming the candles are interchangeable.
Separate the product from the ticker
A spot market concerns exchange of the assets in the quoted pair under the venue's rules. A perpetual is a derivative without a conventional fixed expiry and can involve margin, liquidation mechanics, and periodic funding.
Binance explains its funding mechanism in its official funding-rate guide. Funding terms and intervals can vary by contract and change under the venue's rules. Do not hard-code an eight-hour interval as a permanent property of every perpetual.
A positive or negative funding rate also needs a payer and receiver interpretation. Verify the specific product's convention rather than treating a minus sign as an automatic credit for every position.
Calculate one hypothetical funding event
Assume a simple linear USD-quoted perpetual position with $10,000 of funding notional and a positive 0.01% rate for one settlement. Under an assumed convention where longs pay at a positive rate, the long pays $1:
$10,000 × 0.0001 = $1
At an unchanged notional and rate over three such settlements, the illustrative total is $3. Real funding can change at each event, and the venue determines the applicable valuation and eligibility.
This does not describe a guaranteed carry return for the opposite side. Price changes, trading costs, margin requirements, and liquidation can outweigh a funding receipt.
Measure basis with matching timestamps
Suppose a hypothetical spot quote is 60,000 and a comparable perpetual quote is 60,120 in the same quote currency. The simple relative premium is:
(60,120 − 60,000) ÷ 60,000 × 100 = 0.20%
That is a price comparison at the chosen instant. It is not an annualized yield, the funding rate, or an available risk-free profit. Bid/ask differences and execution across venues can change what prices are actually accessible.
| Quantity | Hypothetical value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Spot quote | 60,000 | Selected spot reference |
| Perpetual quote | 60,120 | Selected derivative reference |
| Relative premium | 0.20% | Difference relative to spot |
| Funding rate example | 0.01% | Separate assumed settlement input |
Do not subtract asynchronously captured prices and describe the difference as a contemporaneous basis without acknowledging the timestamp mismatch.
Check which price controls each account function
A last-traded price, an index reference, and a mark price can serve different purposes in a derivative account. The displayed chart may not be the exact reference used for every margin or liquidation calculation.
Read the venue's current contract documentation and order controls. A protective order in a derivative account is not interchangeable with a stop drawn over a spot candle, and neither guarantees the requested fill.
Keep a record of the price type used for analysis, triggers, and account valuation. This prevents a difference in definitions from being mistaken for an AI forecasting error.
What TickerAI currently reads
TickerAI's public crypto candle adapter uses Binance's spot kline endpoint. That does not provide a native perpetual funding-rate tool or establish a Binance Futures execution connection.
Broker-connected execution uses supported broker instruments, which may include a crypto CFD with its own terms. Do not assume an idea derived from BTCUSDT spot candles has already checked a perpetual or CFD's funding, margin, or basis.
Ask the assistant to state the source and identify missing derivative information. If that information is not available, keep it outside a claimed verified trade plan.
Use volume-unit checks, trading costs, and crypto scanning to review the evidence. Matching the underlying asset is only one part of matching the trade.
