Auto Trading Profit Goals: Equity Progress Is Not Realized Profit
Understand how TickerAI measures auto-trading goals from account equity, why floating P/L matters, and what a completed session does to open positions and orders.
By TickerAI
A profit goal needs a precise measurement rule. Account equity, closed-trade P/L, and the profit attributed to one automated session can produce different numbers at the same moment.
TickerAI's current Auto Trading goal checks compare the account's current equity with its starting equity. Reaching that condition marks the session complete; it does not by itself lock the equity gain into cash or remove all remaining exposure.
Separate the three accounting views
| View | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Balance | Account value after posted transactions under broker accounting |
| Equity | Account value including floating results and applicable adjustments |
| Session realized P/L | Closed outcomes attributed to session activity |
MetaTrader's account display guide explains the broker account fields. Check the actual treatment of fees, credits, and other adjustments rather than assuming a simplified balance-plus-floating-result equation covers every account.
An account-equity goal and a session-only closed-profit goal are different product behaviors. Do not substitute one label for the other when reviewing a result.
Worked example: the goal can include floating gains
Suppose a hypothetical session starts with $10,000 equity. Later the account balance is $10,080 and floating P/L is +$120, with no other adjustments in this simplified example. Equity is $10,200.
The increase from starting equity is $200, or 2%. An account-equity goal of $200 or 2% can therefore be reached even though the example has only $80 of posted balance gain.
If the floating position then loses value, the current equity changes. A previously observed threshold does not guarantee the final realized result will remain at that level.
Account activity can affect the comparison
The current goal calculation uses account equity minus starting equity. It does not isolate that difference to only the session's closed trades or automatically neutralize every deposit, withdrawal, manual position, and unrelated strategy effect.
For example, adding a hypothetical $500 cash deposit while trading P/L is unchanged can raise account equity by $500. That is not trading profit, even though a raw equity-difference calculation sees an increase.
Use a dedicated demo test account when you need a clean behavioral study, and keep a ledger of external cash flows and other activity. Do not describe a goal reached after a deposit as evidence that the agent earned the amount.
Completed does not mean all positions are closed
The current session-completion path updates session status, clears its next scheduled run, and records a notice. It does not itself close open positions or cancel pending orders. Remaining protective levels and broker-side orders need separate inspection.
This distinction also matters when a session ends because of time, drawdown, or usage conditions. Ending the agent loop and removing market exposure are separate operations.
Before a test, decide how remaining positions and orders will be handled. After completion, confirm the actual broker state rather than assuming the word completed means flat.
A sampled goal is not a guaranteed execution boundary
Goal conditions are checked during the engine's processing and monitoring. Equity can move between observations, and an exit request, if separately made, still needs broker execution.
A momentary equity level might be missed between samples, while a detected level might no longer be available by the time an order could fill. A configured target is not a promise to capture an exact account value.
Record the observation time, measured equity, session status change, and any later exits as distinct events. This makes the final result understandable without turning a threshold crossing into a guaranteed fill.
Review the goal in TickerAI
Ask: “Show starting equity, current account equity, the goal formula, and realized results attributed to this session. Identify external activity and list remaining positions and pending orders. Do not call floating or deposited funds realized trading profit.”
Use the demo setup guide, pending-order checks, and daily loss versus drawdown to define the test and follow-up actions. A goal is a stopping condition to understand, not an income promise.
