MT5 Demo vs Live Trading: What an AI Test Can and Cannot Prove

Separate demo workflow testing from live performance expectations. Compare fills, costs, account settings, and model changes before interpreting AI trading results.

By TickerAI

An MT5 demo account is useful for checking how a trading workflow behaves without committing the account's displayed practice funds as real capital. It does not prove that live execution or future results will match the simulation.

For an AI assistant, separate evidence that permissions and tools work from evidence about a strategy's returns. A successful connection, sensible explanation, and profitable short demo run answer different questions.

Define what the demo test should establish

A behavioral test can check whether the system uses the selected account, resolves the intended symbol, sizes a proposed order under stated assumptions, respects the whitelist, and reports refusals.

It can also check whether stopping a session has the intended broker-side effect. Session completion and a flat account are separate states; see auto-trading goal mechanics.

Write pass and failure conditions before the run. Recording only the profitable trades would miss a tool that occasionally selects the wrong instrument or leaves a pending order behind.

Compare settings before comparing results

FieldWhy a mismatch matters
Contract specificationChanges money per point and valid lot steps
Quote source and spreadChanges the prices the strategy observes
Fees and financingChanges net outcomes
Execution and order rulesChanges acceptance, fills, and management
Account modeChanges how deals combine into positions
Agent version and instructionsChanges the decision process being tested

Do not assume a demo server reproduces every setting of a similarly named live account. Confirm the exact contract and current provider documentation.

OANDA notes in its automated-strategy guide that execution effects can differ between demo and live under some conditions. That is provider guidance, not a calibration of every broker's simulation gap.

Measure sensitivity to added friction

Suppose a hypothetical demo sample has 30 winners averaging $8 and 20 losers averaging $6 in absolute value, before a further cost adjustment. Its total is $240 minus $120, or +$120.

If an additional hypothetical $3 of friction applies to each of the 50 round trips, the adjusted result becomes −$30. This is a sensitivity exercise, not an estimate of actual live costs.

The exercise shows why a small average advantage can be vulnerable to changed assumptions. Use actual spread, commissions, and fill records when available, and avoid adding costs that are already included in the starting result.

Preserve timing and failures

Record observation time, model start and finish, order submission, acknowledgement, and actual fills. A configured check interval is not the measured decision-to-fill delay.

Keep rejected requests, stale data, missing tools, and ambiguous order states in the record. If a run excludes those cases from its claimed results, state the exclusion and its effect on the sample.

An improved prompt tested after seeing the first losses is a new version. Do not combine its later successes with the old version's best trades as though one unchanged system produced the whole record.

Review account data as well as the transcript

An assistant's statement that an order was sent is not proof of a fill. Compare exact tickets, volumes, prices, protective levels, and pending orders with the broker account.

Likewise, equity progress can include floating P/L or unrelated account activity. Verify the denominator and funding history before presenting a percentage gain as strategy return.

Use MT5 account comparison and trade-history review to keep the accounting consistent.

Test TickerAI's available workflow

TickerAI supports eligible Auto Trading sessions on supported full-access demo connections, with required plan access, credits, risk acknowledgement, and server execution availability. Read-only connections are for observation rather than order placement.

Use the demo setup guide to create a bounded test and save the transcript alongside broker records. The product does not convert a demo run into an independently verified live track record automatically.

Treat the result as evidence about a specific version, account, period, and set of assumptions. A later live decision requires its own assessment; neither demo profits nor a confident AI explanation guarantees future returns.
