MT5 Stop Loss vs Trailing Stop: What Keeps Working When You Disconnect?
Compare a broker-held stop loss with MT5 terminal trailing logic and AI stop updates. Follow a trailing-stop example and verify what happens after disconnection.
By TickerAI
A stop loss is an instruction attached to a position to exit when its activation conditions are met. A trailing stop is a process that updates a protective level as price moves favorably. The distinction matters when the software responsible for those updates stops running.
Do not assume every feature called trailing behaves identically. A desktop terminal, broker-hosted service, Expert Advisor, and AI agent can use different processes to calculate and submit changes.
Identify where the protective instruction lives
MetaTrader's execution and trailing-stop guide distinguishes broker-server stop-loss processing from the platform's trailing function. The standard desktop trailing logic requires the platform to operate; an already accepted stop level remains subject to broker-side processing.
Therefore, losing a terminal connection can stop new trailing updates without necessarily deleting the last accepted protective stop. Check the actual broker position state rather than inferring protection from a setting that was enabled earlier.
Broker-hosted tools may have different behavior. Verify the particular service instead of applying the desktop terminal rule to every automation product.
Walk through a simplified trailing example
Assume a hypothetical long entry at 100 with an initial stop at 95. Consider a research rule that, after sufficient favorable movement, proposes a stop three price units below the current bid and never loosens it.
| Observation | Hypothetical bid | Candidate stop | Accepted protective level in this example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | 100 | Rule not active | 95 |
| Favorable move | 106 | 103 | 103 |
| Further move | 108 | 105 | 105 |
| Pullback | 107 | 104 | Remains 105 |
This table assumes every modification is valid and accepted. Real instruments impose price increments, minimum distances, and other broker constraints. A rejected modification does not replace the previously accepted level.
The rule is an example for understanding state changes, not a recommended trailing distance. A three-unit distance can mean very different risk on different instruments and timeframes.
A price above entry is not guaranteed net profit
Suppose the stop is moved exactly to the entry price. Commission, financing, or a worse exit fill can still create a net loss. If the stop moves into nominal profit, a gap can still produce a fill beyond the requested level.
Separate the proposed stop, the broker-accepted stop, the trigger event, and the actual execution. Recording all four prevents a chart label from being mistaken for a guaranteed account result.
Read trading costs when comparing a break-even label with net P/L. Do not subtract the same spread effect again if the result already uses actual fills.
How TickerAI stop updates differ
TickerAI's Auto Trading tools can request stop or target modifications for positions attributed to that session, subject to account access and broker acceptance. These are agent actions during scheduled or triggered checks; they are not a guarantee of a continuous native MT5 trailing process.
The current tool set does not expose a dedicated persistent trailing-distance order type. A written instruction asking the model to manage stops should not be described as a broker-enforced trailing algorithm.
Ask the session to explain its intended management rule, but verify actual accepted levels in the broker account. Instructions do not override enforced risk limits or guarantee that each requested update succeeds.
Test the failure path on demo
Record the position ticket, original stop, requested change, broker acknowledgement, and resulting stop. Confirm the last accepted level directly in MT5. Then establish which component would make future updates and how its failure would be detected.
Do not deliberately remove connectivity from a live position as an experiment. Use a supported demo environment and a bounded test plan. The point is to understand state and responsibility, not to demonstrate a guaranteed recovery from every outage.
Use the demo automation guide for setup and ATR stop analysis for evaluating distance assumptions. A trailing process changes an exit rule; it does not establish a profitable strategy or an absolute loss ceiling.
